Ireland’s got the talent for a Service Revolution

Earlier this year, I wrote “It’s Ireland’s time for Service Design”, to help highlight the opportunity Service Design offers to our modern, thriving economy.

Of course, a lot has changed since then, but it is arguable that Service Design has more to offer than ever in this era of new constraints, greater digital transformation, and more complex user needs.

This is a good news story… Ireland has, and is developing, the talent to drive a modern service revolution. And a revolution it will be, not just in terms of customer experience, but in the way we deliver services using digital technology, and with the efficiencies we drive as experiences get better and better.

As far back as 1963, An Taoiseach, Seán LeMass lamented that industrialists were not sufficiently developing a design approach in their business.

“I believe that can largely be attributed to the fact that through An Chomhairle Ealaíon [The Arts Council] industrial design was presented to business people as an arty matter, whereas, in fact, it is an entirely commercial matter. ”

— An Taoiseach, Seán LeMass, Jan 31st, 1963.

We are finally coming to the sensible realisation that design is vital in all walks of commercial life, and that the practice of Service Design will be key…
